What's actually in my van: the kit that earns an Editor's Pick

Every product on this site now carries a badge — Daily Driver, Worth the Splurge, or Editor's Pick — and I want to explain what that last one actually means, because I don't hand it out often.

An Editor's Pick isn't necessarily the most expensive thing in a category, and it isn't always the newest. It's the item I'd replace immediately, out of my own money, if it went missing from the van tomorrow. Right now that's two things: the DEWALT DCK305P2T Combo Kit, because having a drill, impact driver, and grinder on one battery platform removes a dozen small frictions from every single day on site — and the C.K T2271A Non-Contact Voltage Detector, which costs less than a round of coffees and is the single habit that's kept me safest on site.

Everything else on this site earns its badge honestly too — a Daily Driver isn't a consolation prize, it's the tool I'd hand a mate without a second thought and trust to do the job right, day in and day out. Worth the Splurge means exactly that: it costs more, and it's worth it, not just nice to have.

Browse the full kit and you'll see the badge and my rating on every product — it's there so you're not guessing why something made the cut.
